Coastal Carolina – When Leadership and Data Align

“When you surround yourself with really talented players that are willing to drop ‘I’ and ‘me’ for ‘we’ and ‘us,’ extraordinary things can happen,” said Head Coach Kevin Schnall during Coastal Carolina’s Road to Omaha series.


That mindset of culture over ego and team alignment over individualism defined more than a single season. It reflects a broader philosophy driving Coastal Carolina Athletics forward.

In 2025, Coastal Baseball captured a nation-leading 56 victories, Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships, and advanced to the Men’s College World Series Finals. In 2024, Coastal Baseball’s ERA sat at 5.83 (130th nationally). In 2025, their ERA was 3.20, placing them second in the country. Closing that kind of chasm is cataclysmic to a season, and no doubt was fundamental to the Chanticleers' rocketing to the top. Defensive efficiency improved significantly. Player development translated into national awards and multiple MLB Draft selections. The success was historic, but more importantly, it was measurable. The improvement was not incremental. It was structural.


That success on the field has helped shape the program’s momentum beyond the diamond. Six of the eight largest crowds in Springs Brooks Stadium history have come since May 2025, reflecting growing national attention and deepening engagement from Teal Nation.


But the Coastal story does not end with baseball.


A Department on the Rise


The same principles driving baseball’s ascent are visible across the department.


Since Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation Chance Miller’s arrival in the summer of 2024, Coastal Carolina Athletics has accelerated its focus on strategic investment, measurable performance benchmarks, and long-term sustainability. The results are visible across multiple programs.


Over the past two seasons, Coastal Carolina football has hosted eight of the 10 largest crowds in program history. At a time when in-game attendance is declining nationally, average home attendance at Coastal has increased from 17,120 to 19,884 — a 16% jump that reflects growing engagement and belief in the program’s trajectory.


At the same time, philanthropic support has accelerated. Athletics fundraising has increased significantly since FY24, rising 58% year over year to $5.7 million in FY25 and is projected to grow another 40% to $8 million in FY26.


Anyone passionate about sports knows that when the fanbase is bought in, it brings huge returns on investment, both extrinsic and intrinsic. Fans are motivated to attend games and donate, but the sell-out crowds can also create an intimidating environment for opponents.


Strategic facility investments have reinforced that growth. Enhancements at Brooks Stadium (football), Springs Brooks Stadium (baseball), the HTC Center (men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball), and the St. John Stadium (softball) have strengthened infrastructure while expanding premium seating and hospitality offerings. These upgrades reflect long-term planning designed to enhance both competitive success and fan experience.


A pillar of collegiate athletics is student development. At Coastal Carolina, the academic and athletic support staff remain committed to preparing student-athletes to become the leaders of tomorrow. That commitment is reflected in both academic and community engagement milestones. Coastal Carolina Athletics recently logged 11,547 community service hours in a single semester while maintaining a cumulative department GPA above 3.0. The service total led all NCAA Division I programs and earned Coastal Carolina the NCAA Division I Community Engagement Impact Award.


Leadership alignment has been central to Coastal’s accelerated growth. The recent hiring of Head Football Coach Ryan Beard further reflects a commitment to pairing culture-driven leadership with measurable performance outcomes. His track record of elevating programs aligns with a department-wide strategy built on evaluation, accountability, and sustainable progress. Beard signed with the Chanticleers in December 2025. AD Vantage data shows that he is an exceptional hire. Since 2024, he has been the second-highest ranked in terms of CoachEffect amongst coaches working under a football budget of $8M dollars. He also had the greatest improvement rate of any coach within that tier. Seeing what he can accomplish with Coastal’s assets, infrastructure, and fan support will make his inaugural season a must-watch.


When it comes to the Sun Belt Conference, AD Vantage data shows Coastal Carolina has the highest aggregate coach effect of any institution. With the coaching prowess they display, Coastal is pound-for-pound the program to beat in their conference. Their coaches invest in player development, make an impact on their sports, and it is reflected in the success of their overall program.


Department-wide, the indicators point in the same direction. Engagement is rising. Infrastructure is expanding. Performance is improving. Culture is aligned.
